The 516

I hope publishing the names of Philadelphia’s homicide victims helps to ground us all in the crisis that our city is experiencing and make it less abstract.

  • “He was our world.”

Alicia Tanner, sister of James Marcus Taylor, who was killed on Nov. 9.

  • “[He] touched the lives of many in a life cut too short.”

Statement from the family of Everett Peter Mason Beauregard, who was killed Sept. 22.

  • “We will never stop seeking justice.”

Curtisha Neal, sister of Kyle Kaboni Singleton, who was killed May 11.

Opinion
Staff columnist Helen Ubiñas focuses on issues of equity, equality, and justice.

No homicide victim in this city should ever be reduced to a mere number.

But the reality is that, too often, they are. And yet, no matter how staggering the number of people killed in Philadelphia each year might be — 516 in 2022, 562 in 2021, and 98 in less than three months this year— the sheer magnitude never seems to help produce positive change.

So, in addition to the bleak and necessary stories about individual victims and their loved ones that I and my colleagues share during the course of the year, we are dedicating this space to publishing the names of people killed in the city in 2022.

I hope it helps to ground us all in the crisis that our city is experiencing and make it less abstract. I hope that seeing these names helps us grasp the scale of what that number looks like, and also recognize that whatever the figure might be, it only ever represents a fraction of the persistent grief and lingering trauma that flow through our city.

Because let’s be honest — with ourselves and each other: Not enough space is ever dedicated to ending violence, or to helping the people whose lives are directly harmed by it.

It is hardly an exaggeration to suggest that the ever-present specter of brutality threatens not only the lives of our fellow Philadelphians but also the future of our city.

The results of a recent poll that found most Philadelphians think the city is “on the wrong track” are a reality that has long been evident by those most affected by violent crime.

By parents who are forced to monitor their children’s every move in an unceasing effort to keep them safe; by children whose worlds shrink as violence encroaches. And by the residents of the poorest big city in the nation who have always deserved more — especially from their leaders — and who are now less than two months away from having to put their faith in a new mayor making new promises.

The last time The Inquirer published the names of homicide victims was in 2020, when 499 people were killed. My hope then, as it is now, is that seeing the death toll would move all of us to action.

Sadly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, not much has changed. Then and now, an outsized proportion of the victims — 32% in 2022 — were Black men in their 20s. Slightly more than 1 out of every 10 victims was 18 years old or younger (their names are listed here in boldface type). And more than 90% of those who died last year were killed by gunfire.

Also unchanged are the neglect and carelessness with which the loved ones of those who have died are sometimes treated by city officials. Most families wait in agony for answers and justice that never come in a city where only a fraction of homicides are solved. Their sorrow is often ignored, when it isn’t being exploited by political candidates at election time.

Just as I did in 2020, I tried to contact as many loved ones of the 2022 victims as I could. I wanted to prepare them to see their loved ones’ name published in this forum, so as not to cause more misery. But also, at the very least, to ensure that the authorities who track city deaths had spelled their loved ones’ names correctly.

I compared notes with data reporter Kasturi Pananjady to cross-reference lists of the city’s homicide victims that were provided to The Inquirer by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office to ensure as much of its accuracy as possible.

But if anyone notices an error, or wants to share their story, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at hubinas@inquirer.com.

The level of loss experienced by so many in this city, no matter the cause or circumstance, should break our hearts.

The people behind those staggering numbers — the high school football player, the recreation center employee, a father and his 9-year-old son who were gunned down together, and the hundreds more we may never hear about — should have long been enough reason for our selective outrage to turn into collective action.

But the numbers say otherwise.

So I am asking us all to sit with the sickening weight of these names, the anguish behind every life lost, and then do the heavy lifting necessary to ease our city’s pain.

About the data

Inquirer columnist Helen Ubiñas obtained the Philadelphia Police Department’s list of 2022 homicides, which she and data reporter Kasturi Pananjady cross-referenced against a list of homicides provided by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Names provided by the police are pulled from incident reports and are therefore subject to inaccuracies. The medical examiner’s names are pulled from official death certificates after the office investigates how someone died and confirms their identity by contacting next of kin, analyzing fingerprints, or testing DNA.

Nearly all the names provided by the police were matched with death certificates provided by the medical examiner, allowing us to correct the dates of death and the spelling of their names.

In two cases, the medical examiner found that the actual date of death was in 2021, not 2022. In a third, the medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, but the police maintained Tuesday that the death was a homicide. All three names are still included in this list.

The remaining unmatched names are included in this list, though The Inquirer could not independently verify their causes of death, the spelling of their names, or the dates they died. One reason for the discrepancy: Some of those individuals were harmed within city limits — which means that the police have a record of their case — but eventually died outside Philadelphia, which means that the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office does not handle that investigation.

Ubiñas used the corrected list for this column.

The names of children who are 18 years old and younger appear in bold-faced type.
