The Phillies made their first splash of trade season.

The Phillies acquired 29-year-old outfielder Austin Hays from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder Cristian Pache and relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez on Friday. Hays is the league-leading Phillies’ first big addition ahead of the July 30 trade deadline, but this could potentially signal another bullpen move is on the horizon as the team gears up for what they hope is another deep postseason run. Hays excels against lefties

The Phillies were looking for a platoon bat in the outfield to pair with Brandon Marsh, who is hitting .140 with a 7 wRC+ against lefties. By comparison, Hays is hitting .328 with a 156 wRC+ against left-handed hitters this year.

Hays is not a rental player

Hays has one more season of team control after 2024, and will not become a free agent until 2025.

Hays was an All-Star last season

Hays lost playing time in 2024 with more of the Orioles’ stacked prospect pool making their MLB debuts, but in 2023 he slashed .275/.325/.444 and earned his first All-Star appearance.

Hays has only ever played for the Orioles

Hays made his MLB debut for the Orioles in September 2017, but did not become a full-time player in Baltimore until 2019.

On June 22, 2022, Hays hit for the cycle against the Washington Nationals, becoming one of just 27 active Major League players to have achieved the feat – including Phillies J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner, who’s done it three times.
