Phillies’ Jean Segura may land on injured list with strained quadriceps
Segura, who has 15 hits in his last 37 at-bats, will undergo an MRI exam Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.
A Phillies offense that hasn’t come up with many big hits lately may have taken one Tuesday night.
Jean Segura, who has 15 hits in his last 37 at-bats, exited in the second inning of the Phillies’ 10-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants after straining his right quadriceps while running out a ground ball to shortstop.
The severity of the strain won’t be known until Segura undergoes an MRI exam Wednesday, according to manager Joe Girardi, who couldn’t rule out possibly placing Segura on the 10-day injured list.
“We’ll know at some point [Wednesday],” Girardi said.

The Phillies are already without half of their middle-infield tandem. Shortstop Didi Gregorius has missed back-to-back games with swelling in his right elbow after landing on his arm while chasing a pop fly in the outfield last Friday night.
Although Girardi said Gregorius was “definitely better” Tuesday, he was available to play only in an emergency situation. Rookie Nick Maton made his second consecutive start at shortstop after being called up Monday from the alternate training site in Lehigh Valley.
“I’m not sure if we put [Gregorius] in what would have happened,” Girardi said. “We want that elbow joint to calm down. It’s better than it was, but we don’t feel unless it’s an emergency that we want to use him. If he’s not able to play [Wednesday], I would think then it would be Friday.”

Segura and Bryce Harper have been the hottest hitters in a Phillies offense that has struggled lately. Segura rode a 10-game hitting streak into Tuesday night, raising his average to a team-leading .345. Girardi elevated him to the No. 2 spot in the lineup against Giants right-hander Logan Webb.
Brad Miller filled in for Segura at second base. He and Maton could both play the position if Segura needs to go on the injured list.
