The Phillies added some bullpen depth on Tuesday.

The Phillies made two late moves ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline, acquiring reliever Tanner Banks from the White Sox and trading Gregory Soto to the Orioles for two minor-league pitchers. Here's what Phillies fans should know about Banks.

What does Banks throw?

Banks' arsenal includes a four-seam fastball, slider, changeup, curveball, and sinker. His fastball averages 93 mph and generates whiffs 28.6% of the time.

How will the Phillies use Banks?

Banks was a starter earlier in his career, but will be exclusively used as a multi-inning reliever in the Phillies bullpen, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. 

Banks is especially good against lefties

In spite of his 4.13 ERA, Banks dominates against left-handed hitters. This season, lefties are hitting .184 off him, and he has a 34% strikeout rate against them.

Banks, 32, was drafted in the 18th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the White Sox organization and has never been with another major league club. Banks could be a Phillie for awhile, as he is under team control until 2028. 

What did the Phillies give up for Banks?

The Phillies sent single-A infielder William Bergolla to the Orioles for Banks. Ranked as the Phillies' 11th-best prospect by MLB.com, Bergolla, 19, was hitting .295/.350/.385 for high-A Jersey Shore.
