A 28-year-old man became the 289th murder victim in Philadelphia this year after he died of several gunshot wounds, including one to the face, in Fairhill Wednesday night.
Police on Thursday identified the man as Nestor Aviles. Sources told the Daily News that Aviles was a major player in a neighborhood drug organization, and court records show that he has numerous prior arrests on drug charges -- including an open case from about a year ago in the same police district where he was killed.
Aviles was at Mascher and Cambria streets shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday night when someone shot him, cops said. He was pronounced dead there at 8 p.m.
Police have not officially listed a motive in the homicide, and no arrests had been made as of Thursday evening.
According to police department statistics, there were 282 murders in the city as of this date last year, and 274 year-to-date in 2010.
