Message at 7:42 p.m. from Omaha Flyer. Captioned, "Worse period of hockey I've ever seen."
Body of same message, on the Flyers Fan Forum: "What's sad is that there is still time left."
It was only 4 to nothing when Omaha Flyer wrote that, shortly before the end of the first period. Sabres tucked one more in before the horn.
The message before his was captioned: "Beaten in every aspect of the game!"
And before that: "I think I am going to puke."
Let's look somewhere else.
Sound up on TV. Gary Dornhoffer is saying, "If you would have been clocked by a policeman, the Buffalo Sabres would have gotten a lot of speeding tickets.... You've just got to be a lot better as far as checking is concerned."
Game back on. Second period. Antero Niitymaki in goal for Robert Esche. Gagne wheels and fires -- scores. Has good sense not to celebrate. Buffalo's speed forces another penalty, and the rink plays Carmina Burana again. Pretty civilized for a place known for spicy wings, a big fall and record snow.
After the second period. 6-1. Hockey analyst Al Morganti: "I don't want to go back to the cave days, but somebody's got to hit somebody now."
It's not for a lack of trying. So many Sabres power plays - 9 so far - they're going to wear out that copy of Carmina Burana.
Meanwhile, Omaha Flyer has left the building. Announced he was off to read some Henry Rollins. Pelle31 replies: "We need Henry to lace 'em up."
Tv talent (and former goalie) Neil Little fills, saying at this point all he wants to do is watch Ben Eager deliver another few hits.
A Fans Forum poster named lrg51 disagrees. Has a comment titled "Eager:

Hey JR Don't talk trash about Buffalo just because the Flyers play the most undisciplined, slow hockey in the league. ESCHE was horrible in this game. What is it going to take for us to realise that he is a huge part of the problem? The balance of the team starts with it's goaltending. His teamsmanship is lousy. Clarke will need to send him packing, and get someone to replace Johnsson if he is lost. I'm not sure canning Hitchcock is the answer, although his handling of the goalie situation has been a disgrace. I've been a Flyer fan for 24 years. Never seen someone so pathetic as Robert Esche daunt the colors.
The Flyers are a disgrace, what a total embarassment. These thugs try to pass for a legitimate hockey team but its not working. Sabres in 4, unless the Cryers start pulling out baseball bats on the ice which wouldnt surprise me.
Once again speed killed. I enjoy a good hard hitting game as much as anyone, however, that era is over. This is something that Clarke has never understood. This man continues to acquire slow players and players past their prime. For some reason he seems to think that the big bruisers are the way to go. I've come to believe that this team will NEVER win the cup while Clarke is in charge.
I'm so tired of this "new" NHL. There is no flow to the game, every ten seconds there is some soft penalty called. If I wanted to see a bunch of 5 foot 6 foreign people skate "gracefully" I'd watch figure skating. It really has lost all it's appeal to me. I don't know why the league feels the need to create European style hockey in America, it's not interesting.

I am a Sabres' fan and was proud of how my boys played tonight, however I am not proud of the moron's that call themselves Sabres' fans on the comments above. Now, JR, shouldn't have been so harsh on the city when he is just hurt by his teams poor performance, but our fans bashing the city where democracy started isn't very classy as well. I still think my team will win it, however I realize that the Flyers are not as bad as the idiots above (from both cities) are acting like. I think the Sabres will win this in 6 and I am looking for some good hockey...more like Saturday's game!!
I really enjoyed the first game between these two teams. It was exciting and close. The second game was another story. As a Buffalo fan, Im glad we won, buts its a little embarrassing to see the game turn into a World Wrestling Federation match. Although, it couldnt happen too a nicer guy than Bobby (The rat) Clark. Ive been watching these two teams play for 30 years and I remember that cheap shot artist. Whats Bobby going to do next, unretire Dave (The Hammer) Schultz to beat up the Sabres? Lets face it Philly fans, its time to get rid of Clark and get him a job coaching womens Roller Derby.

Hey letsgoflyers26, Phillie hmmmmmm, I been on this planet for 29 years and I don't recall any parades in your fair city to honor any championships. I do remember the Eagles losing a Super Bowl, also 4 NFC championship games (Ouch!). 76ers, hmmmm, oh yeah they got to the Finals and lost there. Phillies I do remember seeing the Jays beat Kruc and the boys when I was in my teens. Oh and last but not least the Flyers, yeah they have done well in last few years, Lindros and boys did well against us a few years back (choker). So back up about Buffalo fans, because Philly is also in a wonderful place in sports, "1st place Losers", like Buffalo. I have been to alot of nice, beutiful, cities in my travels and your city isn't one of them. P.S. - Tell Captain Kangeroo and his Dino Goons that the Niagara Falls region have some beutiful golfing, and tee times are available for next week!

Hopefully this will finally be the series that gets Clarke fired. He still thinks it's 1977. Anyone that's surprised about how this series is going clearly doesn't follow hockey. The Flyers limped into the playoffs, unable to win back-to-back games for the last month of the season and they've won one game in Buffalo since 2001. Clarke put together a team ill-equipped to handle the rule changes in the NHL. Besides, the only reward for winning this series will be losing in five games to the Devils.

Hitchcock has lost it. I think he has to be frustrated when he realizes what he's been given to work with by his ego-driven GM. Esche was the only reason both games in Buffalo didn't end 8-2. Having said that, I think this series can turn around as soon as the flyers learn to pass, skate, defend, backcheck, and kill the 20 stupid penaties they take. JR, don't worry about having to return to such a joke of a city for game 5.
I am getting sick of hearing the same rhetoric from flyers fans over and over again. Just because you constantly hear that Bobby Clarke has put together a team of bullies you begin to believe it, and everytime the flyers lose, you fans go back to your same statements... "Catch up to the new NHL, this isn't the Broad Street Bullies" Please tell me which of these players you really consider a bully. Peter Forsberg, Simon Gagne, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Desjardins, Kim Johnsson(granted he's hurt), Niko Dimitrakos, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Branko Radivojevic, Mike Knuble, Sami Kapanen, Michal Handzus, Freddy Meyer, Eric Desjardins, Brian Savage, Mike Rathje(he's big but hardly a bully), RJ Umberger. This list is almost the entire roster for the flyers that I can name off-hand (with the exception of a few players that actually do play physical), and really you tell me if you consider any of these players real bullies. Maybe if the flyers had some guys that were some bullies, and actually played with some energy they wouldn't be in this spot, but don't accuse them of losing because they are bullies when they are not.

As a Sabres fan, I was of course thrilled to see them crush the Flyers last night. Reading the messages posted here I expected to see fans bashing each others city given the history between the 2 teams. What I don't understand and hadn't expected was to see all the comments from Fyler fans LONGING to see slow boring hockey again. Maybe I should have expected that this is what they'd want to see given that their team can only play that style, but seriously to say that the league is now just about constant power plays is ignorant. The Sabres spent all night on the power play because the Flyers kept committing stupid penalties. STOP gooning it up and we'll beat you 5 on 5 !
I've been a Flyers fan since day one. It would be easy for me to stick up for them, but I can't. The Sabres speed is too much for the Flyers. They hit the holes in blinding speed, and are constantly moving to open areas much quicker than the Flyers. Oh and I'd also like to add. Philly fans, please swallow your pride, and eat what the Sabres are dishing out to our team right now. The Flyers have been physically beat up all year, and were never consistent players once the injurie bug began. Players have been in and out of the lineup all year. THe Flyers began the playoffs against a healthier faster Sabres team,and the outcome of both games were rather obvious to begin with.
The Sabres just keep on getting better and the Flyers should all be wearing dresses. Buffalo is underrated and has 4 great lines. The cup is ours!
And again, you need to blame Bobby Clarke for that. the Sabres were hit pretty hard with injuries this year as well, but good drafting a quality depth has allowed them to overcome those injuries. the days of building teams in the mold of the NYR, Flyers and Maple Leafs are gone...maybe it's petition time in Philly. Trust me, I am a realist, and I can see Buffalo winning this series. I have been a Flyers fan since forever, but right now the Flyers are a long shot at best. Buffalo is faster, and aside from an overhaul, Philly is out matched. The game last night was an embarassment, I'm glad it wasn't televised in my area, otherwise I would be a Circiut City looking for a new TV today. As much as I would love to see Philly even it up, its going to take a whole bunch of Buffalo players to get hurt to slow them down. PS - Earlier post just stirring the pot. LOL
I dont know about wearing dresses. The Flyers totally lost it last night out of frustration. The game was over in a blink of an eye,and their emotions just got the best of them.
But I admit...this series will not be over until we win a 4th game...Philly will come hard, and I expect, a little cleaner tomorrow night.

Woah guys, it's 2 games in a best-of-seven series. Calm down. Yeah, the Flyers got stomped in game 2, but in game 1, we saw two very evenly-matched teams go toe-to-toe for 5 1/2 periods. Hitch is a smart coach, this is a talented team (unless we forget, they lead the most competitive division in the East for a good chunk of the season and they lead the Conference for a while, too), and they'll get the ship righted for game 3. Sure, a two-game deficit is tough to handle, but after an embarassment like that, coming back to Philadelphia, you know that the Flyers will come out and play with some energy. Could they use a little more snarl, a little more toughness? Sure, losing Primeau for the season really hurt them in that department. But this is still a well-coached, talented team, and they will make a series of it yet.
I think Mike took a bong hit before that last post. Philly sucks, you suck, and it wont be much of a series. I expect we will be peeling you off our boots like the cockroaches you really are.
Yes the Flyers will be better on Wednesday night, but they have to stay out of the penalty box,and play five on five. That's their only chance against the Sabres.
Point taken Mike except that the Flyers didn't go toe to toe with us for 4 1/2 periods in game 1. Their same weeknesses were present during that game and they were very lucky not to be down 5-1 in the 3rd period. THIS Sabres team will not lose this series, they've shown us all season they have more heart than that.
I dont think Mike said anything to warrant such a nasty reply. He's just an optimistic fan who hasn't given up yet; there's nothing wrong with that.
But CAN they stay out of the penelty box..They knew full well going into last night that they had to stay out of the box and were not able to do so. They cannot dictate the game tempo and have prooved that they cannot dictate the game physically...They are simply overmatched in this series and Knuble, Forsberg and Gange need to start playing like the world beaters they can be...It just seems to me thatthere is very little interest on their part to do so.

Wow, the iq is a tad low. The city of Buffalo was a great place to grow up. It is not a bad city. I have lived all over the world and I am not ashamed to be from Buffalo. I think Philly is a great city as well, so lets leave it at that. AS far as sports in those cities, ya, neither city has been real good in recent years. To Hockey. The first game was very exciting, your goalie was hot and that kept the game close. You have the right forwards for a team in the new NHL. Other than a couple guys I see you have a good squad up front. It is your Defense that is bad. We in Buffalo were clamering for a big physical D man, And still think we need one but that is all you have, you need more guys that can skate and make good breakout passes to your wingers. Mostly your team needs heart. They are a proud team that cant keep up with the Sabres. The Sabres have been a good team all year. They were third in the east for points and tied with Ottawa and Carolina for games won. you dont do that by being a fluke. Speed kills. Your team needs to regroup, settle down and try to change the gameplan a bit. Look at what Jersey did to us all year. It is worth trying. I think the wheels fell off after you got down to us in the first. Esche chocked and so your team got frustrated. Dont be haters of the game. I have seen some great games this year were there was vey few penelties and the periods flew by because the lack of whistles. Punch counter punch hockey. It was how the game started, not the 70's and 80's version but the 50's an 60's. I like it, Clark is an ass but he will transition your team into a tream that can play in this "new" NHl. It takes time. I think it is over for you and the team will be swept, I just home they play hard and make the next two the same exciting games that game one was. By the way, Forsberg is very frustrated when he is on the ice. I have never seen him play like this. He is given no room to create and has no one but Gange to work with, Your other players need to step up and clearly they havnt. Lets get back to good exciting hockey!
But at least Esche went about trying to fire up his team the right way...there was nothing ceap about what he did, which is more than can be said for guys like Eagers and Gauthier
I have to agree with Sully about the Flyers staying out of the penalty box. It's almost impossible against a much faster team like the Sabres. I dont think the Flyers are the only team to play classless when their opponent is handing their asses to them. It's just the frustration getting to them in such an emotional game.
I see the trash from both cities is right here. At least it is keeping it off the streets. For those that are not just trashing for trashing sake, I commend you. The rest can do what Hitch said last night...figure it out.

Who cares about the Flyers, if the roles were reversed they'd be running their talentless annoying mouths like they usually do. They have no place in the playoffs, I am sure now that the series is shifting to the warm atmosphere of shit-ville, PA that the Flyers will gain some sort of edge, but humping sheep in your backyard hardly relates to hockey. Thank god for Az Sabres fan, or this board would be completely devoid of any sensible rational thought. There are several ignorant statements posted here that have no merit whatsoever, and should probably be chalked up to frustration, like the Flyers last night, more than anything. For anyone to complain that the game is not exciting anymore and that it is just a trade of power-plays, did anyone not see the Canadiens- Hurricanes game last night? (Sadly, I had to watch for quite awhile cause TSN decided to take the Sabres game off). Did you miss the Stars- Avalanche? How about the first game of this series? Give me a break. This is what hockey was designed and intended to be played like. It was born on the frozen surfaces of Canada with swift skaters and deft passers flying up and down the ice. That was and is what made the game great. It took a special skill to be able to lace up a pair of skates, and be able to maneuver gracefully about the ice, while attempting to work some magic with a little black rubber disk. Bobby Orr not like the new NHL? Have you completely lost your mind or are you concussed? How many more end to end rushes would we be able to enjoy of Orr's in the new NHL? The famous photo of him soaring through the air after scoring would be just one of many. Did you seen Niedermayer's end to end spectacle in the Flames-Ducks series? The Sabres have thrived and will contiue to do so, because Regier (who does not receive enough credit- Briere for Gratton? thanks) had the foresight to see how the new NHL would unfold and hedged his bets that he had the right personnel to be successful. As has been stated Clarke held true to his and longtime Flyers beliefs that the bigger more physical players would wear down the opposition. Trouble is, you can't tire them down if you can't catch them at all (Hatcher on Nedved last night?) and when you do illegally you pay for it, which is precisely the way that it should be. Frustration has finally set in. I'm making my plans as to what to do with my time between 7-9:30 pm after Friday.

The sad thing is that Buffalo won the physical battle in Game 1 AND the speed "battle" in Game 2. If we were back to old, slow hockey, the Sabres would win that series too. True. Bringing Primeau back is a mistake. It would be exactly like bringing Lindros back when Steven's cleaned his clock in the playoffs. He would be a distraction at best, and they would run the chance of losing him for good. Thank God they're playing real hockey again. When the Broad Street bullies began their assault on the Cup, hockey as we knew began an evolution of its own. From free wheelin high flyin, hard open ice hitting, unbelievable stick handling to the pile of shit we called hockey 2 years ago. The league finally did something about it. They started enforcing the rules. Allowing talented players to showcase their talents and skating ability without having some big dufus catching free rides up and down the ice. Weeding out the ham and eggers that litter the NHL is the best thing for this game. I'd rather watch young 170lbs guys flying up and down the rink and crackin each other in the open ice than 220lb goons trying to violate each other all night. It truly is a better game now ask anybody.

I do think we are a better all around team then philly, but if you guys stay out of the box while still playing physical, anything can happen, especially when momentum shifts. Either way its gonna be fun to watch.

The Flyers have a well deserved reputation as a tough physical team. They've spent over thirty years building up that reputation. They're mean, they're nasty, they're the "Broad Street Bullies." But at the heart of every bully is a sniveling coward who knows that his prominence is a sham because he only picks on the weak and defenseless. When you stand up to a bully and punch him in the nose, he runs away crying to his mommy about how horribly unfair life is. And that's exactly what happened to the Flyers in Game 1 and especially in Game 2. They were not only outskated, they were outhit and badly too. They didn't just lose at the Sabres' game...they lost at their own.
