Giants win; Eagles eliminated
The Eagles needed help from the Jets to stay alive in the NFC East hunt today, and they didn't get it.
The Giants beat the Jets, 29-14, eliminating any chance the Eagles had to sneak into the playoffs.
The Birds are currently playing the Cowboys (chat here) and host the Redskins in the regular-season finale next Sunday at 1 p.m.
After scoring on their opening possession, the Jets failed to put any points on the board until the 7:17 mark in the fourth quarter when Mark Sanchez got in the end zone with a 1-yard run.
The Jets' offense had one final chance with 2:24 left. Down 6, they took over from their own 8 yard line, but Sanchez was sacked in the end zone for a safety on first down.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz for a 99-yard touchdown. Manning had thrown back-to-back incompletions on the drive, which started at the Giants 1 yard line. But he hit Cruz for what looked like it would be about an 11-yard completion on third down. However, Jets cornerback Kyle Wilson missed a tackle, and Cruz made Antonio Cromartie whiff. Safety Eric Smith had a shot to catch up with Cruz near the sideline, but couldn't bring him down, and Cruz went all the way to the end zone.
Cruz had two career catches for 17 yards before the Eagles hosted the Giants in Week 3. In that game, he caught three balls for 110 yards. Today, Cruz had three catches for 164 yards. His 1,358 single-season mark is the most in Giants franchise history.
Regardless of what happens today, the NFC East will be decided next week. The Giants host the Cowboys, and the winner of that game will take the division.
