Cerrato: Redskins almost traded for McCoy

Everyone knew the Eagles were going to draft a running back in 2009.

Brian Westbrook was approaching 30, and the Birds needed to find his replacement. With the 21st pick in the second round (53rd overall), they selected LeSean McCoy. And the rest, as they say, is history.

But according to former Redskins executive vice president of football operations, Vinny Cerrato, McCoy almost ended up in Washington. Speaking to SiriusXM NFL Radio (via Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post), Cerrato said he was close to trading up in the second round and picking McCoy.

"I remember one time we had a trade, we were in the second round and had a trade done. I called Stump Mitchell the running back coach, I said 'Stump, I can trade right now, I can get the second-round pick. We can take Shady McCoy. Do you want him? I can get it done. We're on the clock. I'm on the phone.' He said, 'No, I don't want him.' I said okay. I said I'm not trading for a guy if my position coach does not want the guy."

Cerrato paints a strange picture. Shouldn't he have known how his running backs coach felt about McCoy prior to the draft?

Either way, the Redskins' loss was the Eagles' gain. Knowshon Moreno, Donald Brown and Beanie Wells were all first-round picks that year. McCoy's easily outperformed all of them. The Jets took Shonn Greene 12 picks after McCoy. None of the other running backs taken after him have done much of anything, although the Texans got Arian Foster as an undrafted free agent.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING...

SI.com's Peter King doesn't believe Howie Roseman when he says he's all in with Michael Vick:

I think I'm skeptical when I hear Eagles GM Howie Roseman say, "We're all in,'' with quarterback Michael Vick. I don't know what that means, really. But "all in'' for the long-term ... I would be shocked if they're that. After Vick went 7-6 and again failed to play a complete season due to injury, and after watching him complete 59.8 percent of his throws with 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, the Eagles have to be wondering if Vick, at 32 this season, is going to be their quarterback in 2013 and beyond. That'll be in Vick's hands this fall.

Warren Moon has been tutoring Andrew Luck, according to Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com. That nugget might not interest this audience much. But Moon is also working with Donovan McNabb:

What Moon has told McNabb, interestingly, is that McNabb lifts too many weights. He wants McNabb to stop bulking up which will give him more flexibility in his upper body.

"I think Donovan has a lot left," said Moon. "He's younger than Peyton Manning, who is 36, and Manning just signed a five-year contract. Donovan can definitely be a great quarterback again."

McNabb spent last season with the Vikings before being released. He has not caught on with a team since.
