2013 NHL Draft: What the national media says about Flyers' draft

The Flyers secured the rights to six players, four defenseman, a center and a goaltender, in the 2013 NHL Draft Sunday.

Only time will tell if the Flyers made the correct selections, but that didn't stop writers from offerting their take on the picks.

Here's a roundup of some thoughts from the national media on the Flyers' draft haul:

CBS Sports' Chris Peters assigned a grade for every pick in the first round and he saved his worst grade for the Flyers' selection:

"The Flyers really couldn't afford to go with such a high-risk pick here in Morin. He is a giant, he's tough and he fights and there is a lot of potential there, but Morin is very raw. He's got a long way to go before he makes it to the NHL. However, if he reaches his full potential, he could be a top-four guy. That's no guarantee, however. To me, it's too early to take this kind of risk for Philadelphia."

Peters also revealed what he believed to be the biggest steals of the draft and he liked the Flyers' second-round pick:

"Philadelphia took a big gamble when selecting Samuel Morin 11th overall, but may have provided itself a bit of a safety net in taking Hagg with its second pick. He was another defenseman that looked to go in the first round, but was edged out by the high-level forwards. Hagg is a terrific puck-moving defenseman who can take care of his own end. He's a smooth skater and mature player, who is only going to get better as he gets stronger and more confident. I would not be totally shocked if Hagg ended up making it to the NHL before Morin."

Rotoworld's Mike Finewax analyzed the first round and thinks the Flyers will be happy with their pick after Morin develops:

"Sam Morin is a smart and smooth skating giant of a defenseman who made impressive strides in his second QMJHL season with Rimouski. He's now a first-round caliber pick who could potentially anchor an NHL blueline a few years down the road."

Neate Sager of Yahoo! Sports describes Morin's huge potential:

"His ceiling is so high even the 6-foot-6 Morin's can't reach it. Morin possesses the confidence and the mean streak to be part of a shutdown defense pairing at the next level. He's still raw, but a project worth taking a chance on."

Kyle Woodlief broke down the first round for USA Today. Here's what he had to say about Morin:

"We can't help but watch him now and wonder how good he can become in 3-4 years. Uses his massive size to play with a mean edge. Wants to impact the game. Already highly mobile for a huge giraffe and still improving as a skater. For a humongous man-child, he's surprisingly aggressive offensively and handles the puck well."

Sports Illustrated's Allan Muir thinks Morin and the Flyers are a perfect match:

"Some guys are meant to wear certain colors, and Morin was born to play in black and orange. This was an ideal pick for the Flyers, who desperately need a big, ill-tempered blueliner to make their zone a little less hospitable and to help restore that Broad Street Bullies image. He needs a couple of years to put it all together, but he'll be worth the wait. They're gonna love this kid in Philly."
