Jim Kenney's comments about LeSean McCoy criticized

It will likely be several more days until officials charge LeSean McCoy for his alleged involvement in a bar fight that seriously injured two Philadelphia police officers, but the former Eagles running back remains the talk of the town thanks to some tough comments from Mayor Jim Kenney.

"If he wants to pound our officers and stomp our officers, then he needs to pay the price and answer for his actions," Kenney told CBS Philadelphia Thursday night. "In addition to punches being thrown, there were some kicks that looked as if they were being leveled and that's unconscionable and it's cowardly."

Kenney's comments aren't sitting well with many critics, who point out that the 27-year-old McCoy has yet to be officially charged for his alleged role in the brawl, which left two officers in a hospital with injuries ranging from a broken rib to eye lacerations.

"With all due respect to Mayor Kenney, he should butt out of this one," NFL insider Mike Florio wrote on his NBC Sports blog. "The case could be headed for a jury that is supposed to be fair and impartial. His comments will make it harder to ensure that a juror will not disregard McCoy's presumption of innocence."

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. was also upset by the remarks, and responded to Kenney's comments on Twitter.

"Why does the fact that these guys were cops matter?" asked CBS Radio host Nick Wright. "They were off duty and arguing over a bottle of champagne."

Kenney's not alone in his opinion on McCoy. Earlier this week, John McNesby, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 5, told Philly.com, "Our guys look like they got the brunt of it, so we're waiting to see the outcome of the investigation. Maybe he should stay in Buffalo and carry on like an idiot in Buffalo."

McCoy, along with three other men, are being investigated for their involvement in a bar fight at the Recess Lounge last Sunday night. According to police reports, the group assaulted three off-duty officers in a dispute over a bottle of champagne.

McCoy played for the Bills last season after six years with the Eagles.
