Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid had everyone laughing at ESPN event
The Sixers big man said that Rihanna should simply "trust the process."
It's a busy Tuesday for Joel Embiid.
Not only is the Sixers phenom scheduled to represent the team during tonight's highly anticipated NBA draft lottery, but Embiid also made a surprise appearance on ESPN's Upfront presentation Tuesday morning in New York City, leaving everyone laughing, including advertisers.
Embiid was joined onstage by singer Kelly Rowland to help promote SC6, ESPN's recent rebrand of its 6 p.m. SportsCenter with hosts Jemele Hill and Michael Smith. Smith took the opportunity to ask the Sixers big man about his recovery from knee surgery.
"I'm doing great," Embiid said. "I'm supposed to be back on the court in two to three weeks."
Embiid said the Sixers have a pretty good chance to end up with a top-three pick in the June 22 draft, but also expressed a bit of frustration about the Sixers' lack of success, whether intentional or otherwise, over the past four seasons.
"Hopefully, this is the last time we're going to be doing this," Embiid said. "I hate losing."
Near the end of the segment, the hosts brought up Embiid's much-talked-about crush on Rihanna. It turns out Rowland is good friends with the pop star, so Smith gave Embiid the chance to make a pitch as to why Rihanna should give him a shot.
"I mean, look at myself," a confident Embiid shot back. "I'm 7-2, I'm good looking. Women usually love my accent because I'm from Cameroon in Africa. And I'm pretty intelligent, too.
"She's got to trust the process," a smiling Embiid said.
Watch:
As my colleague Keith Pompey notes, the Sixers are assured of getting a top-six pick, thanks to finishing the season with the fourth-worst record in the NBA.
The Sixers could also get the Lakers' first-round pick if it falls out of the top three in the draft. The Sixers also have the right to swap first-round picks with the Sacramento Kings.
