Handing out 10 awards from the first round of the NFL Draft
With the first round of the NFL Draft in the books, we present... 10 Awards from the first round of the draft!
Overpopulated War Room Award: The Houston Texans
As Jeff McLane noted after Howie Roseman's pre-draft press conference, the Eagles only have about a dozen people in their war room.
The Texans, meanwhile, have more people in their war room than Mission Control at NASA.
Mock Buster Award: Jacksonville Jaguars
When the Jaguars took Blake Bortles, you could pretty much rip up every mock draft. That moment was similar to when Duke loses in the first round every year to some D2 team in the NCAA tourney.
The Awful Trade Award: Buffalo Bills
The Bills made a ridiculous trade. They traded their 1st round pick (9th overall) in this draft, as well as their 1st and 4th round picks in 2015 to the Browns for the 4th overall pick. They got a great player in Sammy Watkins, which is fine and good, but they're more than a one great WR away from contending.
The False Hopes Award: Anthony Barr at OLB for the Eagles
There was speculation that UCLA OLB Anthony Barr might last all the way to the Eagles at 22. Not even close. He went 9th to the Vikings.
Enormous Investment Award: The Rams' Defensive Line
The Rams picked Aaron Donald with the 13th overall pick. Their entire projected DL was drafted 14th overall or higher.
The Drama Award: Jerry Jones and Johnny Manziel
The 10 minutes the Cowboys were on the clock were amazing. Were they going to draft Johnny Manziel or not? That tension was awesome, but they wound up making a boring (smart) pick in Notre Dame OT/OG Zack Martin.
The Thorn in the Eagles' Side Award: The Saints
Chip Kelly said that the Eagles had targeted 6 players at 22, but by the time they were on the clock, all 6 were gone. I wonder if the Saints trading up to grab Brandin Cooks spoiled the Eagles' plans.
The Things Never Change Award: Andy Reid
Big Red drafted a "fastball" in Dee Ford.
The Eagles Should Have Traded Up for Ha Ha Award: Eagles Fans
It has been suggested by many that the Eagles should have traded up for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (or Brandin Cooks, for that matter), who was drafted 21st overall by the Packers. Hypothetically speaking, if the Eagles traded up ahead of Green Bay to 20, it would have been a bargain for the Eagles to trade their 4th round pick in addition to their 22nd overall pick to get up there. Instead, the Eagles traded back 4 spots and acquired a 3rd round pick. So what would you rather have?
I'll take "Option A" every single time.
The Curious Faller Award: Marqise Lee
I'm shocked Marqise Lee did not get drafted in the 1st round. He had an assortment of injuries last season, so I wonder if his fall was was medical related.
