Reich says Ertz injury is big opportunity for Trey Burton
It seems very unlikely that tight end Zach Ertz will play Monday night when the Eagles visit the Chicago Bears, after displacing his first rib against the Browns. This would leave rookie quarterback Carson Wentz facing his first road start without one of his two top weapons, the other being wideout Jordan Matthews.
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich told reporters Friday that he is confident special teams ace Trey Burton can fill Ertz's role, even though Burton has just three career catches in 31 Eagles games the past two seasons. Burton returned to practice Thursday after missing Sunday's opener with a calf strain.
"Trey's got to step up. We've got to adapt. You just switch up your personnel groups," Reich said. "The good thing is, with this offensive system, it's all built on a multiple approach. You can change formations. You can change personnel groups and still run the same plays. So you've got to adapt a little bit, but the system has some things that make it conducive [to that], because this stuff comes up all the time."
Reich said his confidence in Burton was built up through weeks of spring and summer drills.
"You work with these guys every day, it's the grind of the OTAs and training camp, builds a lot of confidence," Reich said. "Trey repeatedly showed, day-in and day-out, that it just wasn't an occasional thing for him to keep flashing in practice or making plays. It just shows a lot of natural ability, instinctive ability. It's a big opportunity for him."
Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said he doesn't know if he'll have starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who suffered a hamstring injury in the opener. Schwartz said of rookie corner Jalen Mills, who seems likely to start if McKelvin doesn't: "From the time he's been here, nothing's been too big for him."
