Report: Tony Romo ruled out vs. Eagles
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Cowboys QB Tony Romo has been ruled OUT for next Sunday night's matchup against the Eagles for the NFC East title, due to a back injury.
Head coach Jason Garrett would not definitively rule Romo out in his press conference on Monday. Kyle Orton would start for the Cowboys in Romo's place if he indeed he cannot go. Orton has been both a starter and a backup at varying points in his career, but has only attempted 267 passes since 2010, and just 15 in his two years with the Dallas Cowboys.
It doesn't end there. Standout LB Sean Lee is also reportedly doubtful, per Calvin Watkins of ESPN:
In other words, the QB of the offense and the defense will both likely be watching from the sidelines in the Cowboys' most important game of the season.
The point spread for this game opened with the Cowboys as 2.5-point favorites before the Eagles' dismantling of the Bears Sunday night, after which the Eagles became 2.5-point favorites. After news of Romo's injury broke, the line jumped to 7.5.
The Cowboys have been decimated by injuries this season.
• In training camp, the Cowboys lost DE Tyrone Crawford for the season with a torn Achilles.
• In September, they lost starting DE Anthony Spencer for the season after he had surgery on his left knee.
• In October, they lost starting RG Brian Waters for the season with a triceps injury.
• Last week, the Cowboys were missing CB Morris Claiborne (hamstring), standout special teamer and WR Dwayne Harris (hamstring), and LB Ernie Sims (groin). Starting WR Terrance Williams (hamstring) was listed as questionable, and only played about half the team's offensive snaps.
• DeMarcus Ware (back) and DT Jason Hatcher (neck) have also played through nagging injuries.
Meanwhile, the Eagles suffered a rash of ACL tears during training camp to WR Jeremy Maclin, WR Arrelious Benn, LB Phillip Hunt, and LB Jason Phillips. Otherwise, the Eagles come into this matchup extraordinarily healthy for this time of year, as their injury report only listed seven players last week, five of whom were listed as 'probable.' Only Kurt Coleman and Colt Anderson were ruled out.
