2014-15 UEFA and CONCACAF tournament TV schedule
Here's your viewer's guide to this season's TV coverage of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, and the CONCACAF Champions League.
Almost all UEFA tournament broadcast rights in English and Spanish are held by Fox Sports. The network has sub-licensed some Champions League and Europa League rights to ESPN. CONCACAF rights are shared between Fox in English and Univision in Spanish.
Fox spreads games across Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, Fox Soccer Plus, Fox Deportes and its regional sports networks. Philadelphia doesn't have a Fox RSN, but if you have a satellite dish you can pick one up from elsewhere in the country. Fox also has a partnership with DirecTV to create overflow linear channels for other simultaneous games.
This season brings a new twist that should make soccer fans quite happy. For the first time ever, Fox Soccer Plus will broadcast whip-around coverage of all simultaneous group stage games. A list of providers that carry the channel is available here.
Fox Soccer Plus is a premium channel, and it will cost you extra on top of whatever cable or satellite package you have. Most providers charge $10 to $15 per month for it.
If you don't want to stump up that much money for one channel, you might consider subscribing to the Fox Soccer 2 Go online package. It isn't cheap either - $19.99 per month or $119.99 for a year - but you get a lot more for the money than you do from Fox Soccer Plus. The online platform includes every game carried on every Fox network, the Champions League whip-around broadcast, and a lot of games that aren't televised.
Fox Soccer 2 Go's coverage includes every UEFA and CONCACAF Champions League game, every UEFA Europa League game, the Scottish Premier League and second-tier Championship, England's FA Cup and national team home games, the newly-launched Indian Super League, Australia's A-League, and some rugby and Australian Rules football. You can watch on your computer or on Fox Soccer 2 Go's tablet and mobile apps. All games are archived for seven days.
Games broadcast on Fox over the air, Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 are streamed free of charge with pay-TV authentication on the Fox Sports Go iOS app. The list of participating providers is here. Your individual pay-TV subscription must carry the channel you want to watch in order to access it.
ESPN's rights include Spanish-language coverage of 72 Champions League games and the entire Europa League on ESPN Deportes. The Champions League games will be a mix of qualifying playoff, group stage and knockout round games. Fox Deportes gets first pick for a Spanish-language game on each match day, and ESPN Deportes will make its choice after that.
The sub-license deal also includes rights to English-language online streams for 68 games via ESPN3. The package includes eight qualifying playoff and 60 group stage games. The rights are non-exclusive, which means they will be carried on both ESPN3.com and Fox Soccer 2 Go, and Fox will get to protect some games before ESPN makes its selections.
On top of all that, ESPN has an option to broadcast a few games in English on ESPN2 over the course of the season. A spokesperson told me (publicly via Twitter, to Bristol's credit) that it will have some "key matches of interest" on the network. I was also told by another source that ESPN2 has the fourth pick on each matchday. To the best of my knowledge the first three picks go to Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports Net affiliates, in that order.
Games streamed by ESPN are available via the WatchESPN website and apps. ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes feeds are only available if your pay-TV subscription includes the respective channels. Any feed with a ESPN3 logo next to it is open to the larger ESPN3 audience, which is based on internet service providers instead of pay-TV providers.
All games televised on ESPN Deportes are also streamed online in English via ESPN3. So if you see a game listed below as being on ESPN Deportes and you want to watch it with English commentary, you'll be able to do so online.
The only UEFA tournament rights not held by Fox are the Europa League qualifying playoffs, because those games are sold by each home team. beIN Sports bought some rights for that round. Coverage includes streaming through the network's authenticated online platform, beINSports Connect. The list of participating providers is here.
Univision will air CONCACAF Champions league games primarily on Univision Deportes. Some will also air on Galavisión and UDN 2, which is carried exclusively on Dish Network's Spanish-language tier.
The UDN schedule includes eight tape-delayed broadcasts. I am only listing live broadcasts on here, but it's worth noting that all of the tape-delayed games feature MLS teams. If you don't have Fox Soccer Plus or Fox Soccer 2 Go, that may come in handy. The schedule of those broadcasts is here.
As of now, Univision does not stream its CONCACAF Champions League games online, but that may change as the network expands its online offerings.
All times listed below indicate when broadcast windows start. UEFA Champions League games almost always kick off at 2:45 p.m. Eastern, except for those played in Russia, which kick off at 12:00 p.m.
Fox Sports 1's coverage usually starts with a pregame show at 2:00 p.m., leading into the main broadcast window at 2:30 p.m. Europa League kickoff times can vary. CONCACAF Champions League games usually kick off at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Eastern.
Last season, I only listed games that were televised. This season, I am including games that are only available on Fox Soccer 2 Go. As I noted above, all UEFA and CONCACAF Champions League games are available through the platform, whether they are televised or not. Some games on the schedule that are listed for Fox Soccer 2 Go coverage may have TV coverage added later, and I'll make those changes as necessary.
As I have a lot of Canadian readers, here's a quick rundown of where you can find games north of the border.
English: Rogers Sportsnet owns rights to both the UEFA and CONCACAF Champions Leagues. The network's UEFA schedule, which is set on a weekly basis, can be found here. The network's CONCACAF schedule, which includes 21 group stage games on Sportsnet World can be found here.
French: TVA Sports owns French-language rights to UEFA and CONCACAF competitions. Their UEFA schedule is set on a weekly basis and can be found here. Their CONCACAF offerings will be limited to Montréal Impact games.
I have also added in the schedule for Euro 2016 qualifying matches and warm-up friendlies. Even though I keep making this post bigger, I figure it's fair to have club and national team tournament listings in the same place.
Fox and ESPN have equal shares of a broad deal for UEFA national team tournaments, including qualifiers for the European Championships (which ESPN airs) and the World Cup (which Fox airs).
One last note: this calendar will cover U.S. men's national team games up to the start of the Gold Cup, and U.S. women's national team games up to the start of the World Cup. I have to stop it at some point.
