Union to sign Carlos Ruiz?

No, not that Carlos Ruiz. This time, we're talking about one of the most prolific - and temperamental - goalscorers in Major League Soccer History.

According to Guatemalan news organization Prensa Libre, Ruiz has agreed to a termination of his current contract with Greek club Aris Salonika, and reached a deal with the Union. Ruiz's agent is quoted by name in that story as saying that negotiations have been going on since December.

A spokesperson for the Union told me that Ruiz has not signed a contract with the club, but did not deny the report. I was told that there is a difference between an agreement and a contract. Make of that what you will.

This is not the first time that Ruiz has been linked with the Union. There were rumors last year that the Union were looking at him, but they never came to anything. The current reporting makes

it sound like discussions have gone a lot further this time around.

As Kerith Gabriel of the Daily News put it on Twitter this afternoon, "Ruiz to Philly not etched in stone but the tablets appear to be en route."

Other reporters who have said on Twitter that Ruiz is coming to Philadelphia include Telefutura's Ivan Kasanzew and Jorge Perez-Navarro.

Exactly why Peter Nowak, who is very much a team-first manager, would want Ruiz here is somewhat of a mystery to me. Ruiz has quite the ego, and is also renowned as being perhaps the best diver in Major League Soccer history. But he definitely knows how to put the ball in the net, as he scored 90 goals in his seven years with various MLS clubs last decade.
