A guide to Art for the Cash Poor

For over a decade, InLiquid Art & Design has been giving those a little strapped for cash a chance to expand their art collection while staying on budget. The 16th annual Art for the Cash Poor, held Friday, June 12, through Sunday, June 14, at Crane Arts (1400 N. American St.), showcases work from over 100 local artists for under $200. That’s a deal we can get behind.

That's a deal we can get behind.

It all starts with a preview party on Friday, June 12, benefiting both InLiquid and the AIDS Fund. Be one of the first to get your hands on the art up for grabs from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Attendees will be able to meet the artists and sip on cocktails from Siembra Spirits Tequila, Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey, Tito's Vodka, Rowhouse Spirits Gin, and beer by Philadelphia Brewing Co. The soundtrack of the evening will be provided by Disco Hootenanny.

Also during the preview will be a multidimensional installation by repurposed antique jewelry shop The Artemisian. Featuring a 8' x 6' x 4' wood structure that can either be entered or viewed from outside, "Celestial Bodies" utilizes sound and sight to experience The Artemisian's vision of the galaxy.

Things really get swinging on Saturday, June 13 when the sale officially begins at noon. (Same with Sunday, June 14. The show continues until 6 p.m. both days.)

Some artists to anticipate include:

  1. Pluma Avis Domus (Saturday only): Handcrafted wooden birdhouses.

  2. Jae Martin: Graffiti inspired graphic paintings.

  3. Bill Brookover (Sunday only): Geometric prints utilizing paper and water-based inks.

  4. Genevieve Geer: Hand painted glass sculptures of showgirls, royalty, warriors, mermaids and strongmen.

  5. MKC Photography: New ethereal prints from the Philly-based photog.

  6. Bregga & Co.: Sleek leather wallets.

  7. Linda Johnson Studio: Handcrafted teakettles, serving plates and mugs with cutesy painted designs.

  8. The Tin Goat: Soaps, candles, lip balms made with natural ingredients.

  9. Riot Alliance: Stone-based jewelry with a portion of proceeds donated to social justice-related organizations.

  10. Masthead Print Studio: Local printmaking firm.

  11. Sherman Oberson: Quirky clay sculptures from tiki masks to tiny tomatoes.

Let's not forget about the eats. Chewy's (Saturday only), Farm Truck (Saturday only), Kung Fu Hoagies, Weckerly's Ice Cream, Foolish Waffles (Sunday only), Mom-Mom's Polish Food Cart (Sunday only) and Jerry's Kitchen (Sunday only) will be serving their specialties. Philadelphia Brewing Company will keep the drinks flowing with a beer tent on both days.
