AccuWeather Forecast … Not on KYW

After long relationship, KYW, AccuWeather part ways.

Some readers have asked whatever happened to the melodious voice of meteorological  poet laureate Elliot Abrams on KYW Newsradio.

Ending a relationship that dates to the 1970s, the early days of both the station's venerable all-news format and AccuWeather, KYW's weather now is exclusively in-house.

Steve Butler, KYW's news director, says the move had nothing to do with money.

Rather the station decided to keep it in the company and go with the CBS3 meteorologists, also housed in the former SmithKline pharmaceutical factory on Spring Garden Street,  now  the "CBS Broadcast Center."

Earlier this year KYW relocated there from its longtime Independence Mall location, and last month saw another big change in how it delivers the weather.

With direct access to the CBS3 meteorologists, "we have more flexibility,"  Butler said.

For the last few years, KYW had used Accu-Weather on a part-time basis, but evidently this is really the end.

AccuWeather continues to provide forecasts to WPVI-TV, and supplies The Inquirer's daily weather package.

The company's founder, Joel Myers, and Abrams both are Philly natives.
