Wawa's first store built 50 years ago to close
Wawa’s first store that opened 50 years ago in Ridley Township will be closed to yield to a planned so-called Super Wawa nearby, according to a media report.
The first Wawa store, which opened 50 years ago in Folsom, Delware County, will be closed to yield to a planned "Super Wawa" nearby.
The convenience store at McDade Blvd. and Swarthmore Ave. in Ridley Township will be shut down in favor of a new location on the Boulevard at Kedron Ave. The new store is scheduled to open in spring 2016, said a Wawa spokeswoman.
The new Super Wawa will hold six islands for gas pumps on a four-acre site. Construction will begin early next year.
Spokeswoman Lori Bruce said the new structure will still be considered "Wawa No. 1."
"As the location of our first-ever convenience store, our Folsom Wawa holds a special place in our hearts," Bruce said in a statement. "So it is emotional yet exciting for all of us, as we say goodbye to the physical location of our very first Wawa, while welcoming a new, state-of-the-art location in its place – in the same township, just down the street."
Bruce said the new Wawa would employ about 30 more people than the Swarthmore Ave. store.
"We truly believe this new store is a necessary step in our evolution, the promises to offer our one-of-a-kind experience to our ever-growing Wawa family of customers and associates," she said.
