Main Line Health on Tuesday announced a $52.8 million project that will double the size of Lankenau Medical Centers emergency department to 32,200 square feet from 15,800 square feet.

The Wynnewood emergency department, which was built to handle 35,000 patients annually and now receives 54,000 annually, will remain open during construction, which is expected to start in July and be completed in 2019, Main Line said.

Lankenau received Level 2 trauma certification last summer.
