Mercy Philadelphia Hospital getting $15M ER expansion

Mercy Philadelphia Hospital on Thursday announced a $15 million renovation and expansion of its emergency department.

The project is expected to be completed next year, will add 10,000 square feet to the existing 13,000-square-foot department at the century-old West Philadelphia hospital.

The addition, supported with a $500,000 redevelopment assistance capital grant, will add 30 new exam rooms, including two trauma rooms, two isolation rooms, and a secured holding room.

"Mercy Philadelphia Hospital is deeply rooted in the West Philadelphia community, and we believe everyone should have access to safe, high-quality health care," said Susan Cusack, the hospital's executive director. "This expansion will enable us to serve our emergency patients in a new, comfortable setting with the latest amenities."

Mercy Philadelphia, which is part of Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania and owned by Trinity Health of Livonia, Mich., has company in emergency department expansions.

Main Line Health in May announced a $52.8 million project that will double the size of Lankenau Medical Center's emergency department to 32,200 square feet from 15,800 square feet.
