Temple University Hospital tops nationally in lung transplants

Temple University Hospital performed 131 lung transplants last year, more than any other transplant center in the nation. It trailed the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in overall transplants.

Temple University Hospital performed 131 lung transplants last year, more than any other transplant center in the nation, Temple University Health System said Tuesday.

The number of lung transplants at Temple increased from 101 in 2016, when Temple was one behind the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to data from the Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Including all organs, Temple performed 210 transplants last year, up from 56 five years earlier.

HUP led the region with 470 transplants of all organ types, up from 384 in 2012. Also among the region's transplant leaders in the Philadelphia region were Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with 212 and Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia with 161.
