Touch 'Em All: Giantsregain Cain, lose Belt

The San Francisco Giants reinstated righthander Matt Cain from the 15-day disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the 15-day DL.

The San Francisco Giants reinstated righthander Matt Cain from the 15-day disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the 15-day DL.

Cain missed two turns in the rotation. He had not pitched since April 23 because of a cut on the tip of his index finger, which occurred in the clubhouse kitchen at AT&T Park when he tried to catch a knife that fell out of his hand.

Belt, who led the club with nine home runs, broke his left thumb Friday night when he was hit with a pitch by Paul Maholm. He is expected to be out for at least six weeks, and was back in San Francisco to see a hand specialist. Catcher Buster Posey started at first base Saturday against Zack Greinke in the Giants' 6-2 loss, but manager Bruce Bochy said that leftfielder Michael Morse will get the bulk of the playing time at first because of his experience there.

Braves put Walden on DL

The Atlanta Braves placed righthander Jordan Walden on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled lefthander Ian Thomas from triple-A Gwinnett. The move with Walden is retroactive to May 5. The Braves are also moving Alex Wood to the bullpen for at least a week.

Mets ace Harvey throws

New York Mets ace Matt Harvey took the next step in his rehabilitation from right-elbow surgery, increasing his throwing distance Friday from 90 to 120 feet. Harvey said his target date for throwing off a mound is June 10.

Harvey had Tommy John surgery Oct. 22.

Also, the Mets recalled shortstop Wilmer Flores from triple-A Las Vegas; he started Friday against the Phillies.

Omar Quintanilla was designated for assignment to make room for Flores.

Reds' Bruce off crutches

Jay Bruce was on hand to greet his Cincinnati teammates when they returned home Friday.

The Reds rightfielder wasn't able to travel with them to Boston after arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He is expected to miss about a month.
