Philly school police officer collapses in bathroom, dies
Sgt. Daryl Giles, 50, was found in a staff bathroom at George Washington High in Northeast Philly around noon on Monday.
A SCHOOL POLICE officer died yesterday after collapsing in a Northeast Philadelphia school bathroom, officials said.
Sgt. Daryl Giles, 50, was found in a staff bathroom at George Washington High School, on Bustleton Avenue near Gorman Street in Bustleton, about noon after suffering an apparent medical emergency. He was taken to Holy Redeemer hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"He was a longtime member of the Washington High School family, and he's really loved by the students and staff, so it's been a tremendous shock to them," district spokesman Fernando Gallard said.
District sources said Giles had helped break up a fight at Washington shortly before he was discovered. Gallard could not confirm Giles' involvement, but said that three students were arrested in connection with the fight.
Giles had been an officer with the district for 19 years, Gallard said.
