Best breakfast: Bob's Diner
Location: 6053 Ridge Ave., Roxborough, 215-483-9002.
Hours: 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
Hot seller: The Eye-Opener: eggs made any style, home fries, meat, toast, and coffee . . . all for $5.50. Another signature dish, Bob's Muffin, piles eggs, cheese and meat on an English muffin.
Owner: Jim Evans, for the past 15 years.
So who's Bob?: That would be Bob Harmer, who owned the place for 13 years before selling to Evans. When Harmer bought the diner it was called 20th Century, but he wanted the more personal name. After selling to Evans, Harmer stayed on as a cook for eight years and Evans decided to stick with the name, too.
Look who's cooking: Owner Evans cooks too, and his specialty is omelets which, on weekends, he prepares out front so that customers can watch the show.
Success secrets: "Our waitresses will go that extra step," said Evans. One of the waitresses ("my right-hand gal") has been there for more than 30 years.
You oughta be in pictures: Bob's Diner was used in the 1988 film "Stealing Home" starring Mark Harmon. Harmon raved about the milkshakes. *
