Starry starry night

With much fanfare, more than 500 guests and dignitaries from Italy celebrated the opening of the Franklin Institute's latest exhibition, "Galileo, the Medici and the Age of Astronomy," at a preview gala held Thursday at the museum. The exhibit features artifacts collected by the Medici family, including such scientific instruments as sundials, thermometers, and a compass believed to have been used by Michelangelo, as well as paintings, prints and manuscripts. But the star of the show was one of only two existing telescopes owned and built by Galileo, on display outside Italy for the first time. The gala was chaired by Martha J. McGeary Snider. The exhibition, timed to coincide with the International Year of Astronomy and the 400th anniversary of Galileo's discoveries, continues through Sept. 7.
