Sideshow: Foxx: Film violence hurts
Hollywood needs to learn a lesson from Friday's shootings at a Connecticut elementary school and take responsibility for glorifying violence, movie star Jamie Foxx said over the weekend.
Hollywood needs to learn a lesson from Friday's shootings at a Connecticut elementary school and take responsibility for glorifying violence, movie star Jamie Foxx said over the weekend.
"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence," Foxx told the Associated Press. "It does."
Foxx's interview on Saturday was part of a promo press blitz for Quentin Tarantino's violence-o-ramatic spaghetti Western Django Unchained, a blood-drenched, guns-blazing yarn about American slavery.
Foxx's costar, Kerry Washington, said the film's violence was part and parcel of its important message about the horrors of slavery.
"I do think that it's important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence," she said, "and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills."
'The Hobbit' slays competition
Lord of the Rings trilogy demiurge Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ruled the box office chart this weekend, hauling in $84.8 million, according to studio estimates.
The first in a series of films about J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved, if gastrically greedy, hairy-toed diminutive heroes, the film stars Martin Freeman (Sherlock Holmes) as Bilbo Baggins and LOTR veteran Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
Experts say the film is expected to make bucketloads of money. (Yes, really!)
None of the other top five films came close. The Chris Pine- and Alec Baldwin-voiced cartoon Rise of the Guardians was at No. 2 with $7.4 million, followed by Steven Spielberg's Lincoln ($7.2 million), Bond pic Skyfall ($7 million), and Ang Lee's transcendent cinematic soul-journey, Life of Pi ($5.4 million).
