BIG DEAL EVENTS
Philadelphia Auto Show
Kick tires and dream hot-rod dreams in a magical land called the Convention Center where the cars are neither caked with road salt nor running low on wiper fluid. Our choice for most Matchbox-like: the Stryker Green V-10 2014 SRT Viper.
This year's Face Off competition pits vintage Ford muscle cars against vintage Mopars. Jeep and Toyota will again let you "ride inside."
PA Convention Center, 1101 Arch St., through Feb. 16, $6-$12 (kids under 7 free), phillyautoshow.com. Hours are 9 a.m.-10 p.m. both Saturdays, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. both Sundays, noon-10 p.m. weekdays, phillyautoshow.com.
Pennsylvania Ballet
One upside to February in Philly is glorious fine arts programming, like this lineup. George Balanchine's masterpiece "Serenade," set to Tchaikovsky, joins Jerome Robbin's "Afternoon of a Faun," Margo Sappington's "Under the Sun Pas de Deux," and Jiri Kylian's "Petite Mort" - in a company premiere - set to two Mozart piano concertos.
Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, $25-$125, 215-893-1999, kimmelcenter.org.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Penn Museum
The vibrant Celebration of African Cultures - celebrating its 25th year - returns to the Penn Museum with another lineup of primo entertainers, and a DIY crafts station for kids. Performers include the Women's Sekere Ensemble, the African Rhythms dance troupe, the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble and storyteller Momma Sandi. Or do your own entertaining in a Tunisian bellydance workshop.
Penn Museum, 3260 South St., 1-4 p.m. Saturday, $10-$15 (military, 5 and under free) 215-898-4000, penn.museum.
PLAYS FOR KIDS
'Sideways Stories from Wayside School'
Arden Theatre Co. extends the run of its popular children's play, based on the Louis Sachar books - but only through Feb. 15. This smart intro to live theater, for kids 5 and older, comes with a mild warning, for special effects. Strobe lights and (water-based) smoke effects could scare some jumpy youngsters.
Arden Theatre, 40 N. 2nd St., through Feb. 15, $16-$36, 215-922-1122, ardentheatre.org.
'Alexander, Who's Not Not Not . . . Going to Move'
Saturday's matinee is the final performance for this other fun kids' play, a musical based on Judith Viorst's defiant anti-hero.
Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St., 11 a.m. Saturday, $10-$16, 215-574-3550, walnutstreettheatre.org.
