The Fairmount Park Conservancy opened the doors of the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center on May 5 for the eighth annual Centennial Celebration, attended by 500 community members and supporters of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. A reception and dinner were part of the evening, with the backdrop of a beautiful greenhouse. This year's honorees were John Crowe, president and CEO of Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed, receiving the award for corporate leadership; Kathleen McGinty, Gov. Wolf's chief of staff, receiving the civic leadership award; and Chris Matthews, MSNBC host and political commentator, receiving the John Binswanger Park Champion award. Event cochairs Leslie Anne Miller and Marc Brownstein and honorary cochairs Mayor Nutter and wife Lisa had quite a night, bringing in more than $470,000 to keep Philadelphia's 10,200-acre park system, including 100 neighborhood parks, maintained and thriving.
