PDR: In the Swim

Since 1979, when 11- and 12-year-old freestyle relay swimmers coached by Jim Ellis placed eighth nationally, his program has had more than 30 swimmers ranked in the top 16 for their age group.

Among the highlights:

  1. 1988: Atiba Webb sets 50-meter breaststroke record as an 11-year-old; it stands for 18 years.

  2. 1992: Jason Webb, 16, is the youngest male athlete in the 100m backstroke at the Olympic trials; he places 32d.

  3. 1996: Webb is 16th in the 100m backstroke and 11th in the 200m backstroke, and Michael Norment is 14th in the 100m breaststroke at the Olympic trials.

  4. 2000: Webb is 17th in the 100m backstroke and 18th in 200m backstroke, and Brielle White is 10th in the 100m backstroke at the Olympic trials.

  5. 2004: White is fourth in the 100m backstroke at the Olympic trials
