IF HILLARY CLINTON can make nice with Barack Obama, is it not possible for rappers to join a similar love train?

Uh, no.

Oft-jailed Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight was back behind bars yesterday on assault and drug charges after he was accused of beating his girlfriend while brandishing a knife, police said.

He was released last night after posting $19,000 bail.

Knight, who's 43 now and old enough to have gotten all that testosterone-filled gangsta machismo out of his system, was arrested about 6:40 a.m. (Las Vegas time) on a busy street near the Strip. Police responding to a domestic-violence call allegedly found Knight beating his longtime girlfriend with the knife in his hand.

"He did not stab her," said department spokesman Jacinto Rivera.

Police did not identify the woman, who told officers that she was Knight's girlfriend of three years. She was treated at a hospital for minor injuries, according to Rivera.

Besides the beating on the street, injuries may have come from the incident before the pair tangled outside, when the couple argued in Knight's champagne-colored Cadillac Escalade and he allegedly punched her in the head.

"The victim purposely grabbed the steering wheel and caused the vehicle to hit the curb," police said in a statement. Police said that the woman tried to run away, but that Knight caught her.

Knight was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Clark County jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription and of domestic violence.

Knight was found with Ecstasy and hydrocodone when he was arrested, police said.

* We all take life "One Day at Time," former teen star Mackenzie Phillips more so than others.

She was arrested yesterday on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance after she allegedly was found carrying drugs at Los Angeles International Airport.

Phillips, who's 48 now and still unable to shake her demons, was heading to New York when she failed to pass a security screening, and a secondary search turned up a small amount of cocaine and heroin in her possession, an airport police spokesperson said.

Disappointed Neil Diamond fans will get a refund after attending a concert at Ohio State University in which the 67-year-old singer's voice sounded raspy.

Some fans left the Monday concert early, and others said that Diamond completed the concert without mentioning anything to the audience about his voice.

A statement from Diamond says that a doctor has diagnosed acute laryngitis.

Diamond spokeswoman Eve Samuels says that the singer is offering a refund to those who place a request before Sept. 5. "I haven't let you down before and I won't let you down now," he said in an apology on his Web site.

* Speaking of raspy-voiced singers, Michael Bolton and Nicollette Sheridan have ended their two-year engagement with an amicable split.

The couple spent five years together in the '90s, then rekindled their romance in 2005.

* Billboard.com reports that Jay-Z will be the debut act at the newly renovated Hollywood Palladium when it reopens its doors Oct. 15.

The rapper will be backed by a 12-piece band.

When the venue opened in 1940, the opening act was Frank Sinatra. He too was backed by a band - the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

"Just as Frank ushered in a golden era, I hope this opening will mark the beginning of a resurgence in generation-defining live music," Jay-Z said.

Lil Wayne will be the musical guest.

* Federal authorities arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill yesterday, saying he's suspected of streaming songs from Guns N' Roses' unreleased album, "Chinese Democracy," on his Web site.

That's a violation of federal copyright laws.

Authorities say that Cogill posted nine unreleased Guns N' Roses songs on his Web site in June.

The songs were later removed.

According to an arrest affidavit, Cogill admitted to agents that he posted the songs on his Web site.

Hey, what's amazing is that GnR actually have nine songs. *
