Philly-shot Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston film to see release after being stuck in Weinstein Co. limbo

Last year, Bryan Cranston and Philly native Kevin Hart came to town to film The Upside, a remake of the popular 2011 French film Intouchables. But with the bankruptcy of film studio The Weinstein Company following sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the film was shelved.

Now, however, the film has been picked up by a distributor.

STXfilms has acquired rights to The Upside, Deadline reports, and has planned for a global release of the movie. Directed by Neil Burger, who also directed the Philly-filmed Limitless in 2010, the movie follows Hart, a paroled convict, as he develops a relationship with Cranston, a paralyzed billionaire. Julianna Margulies, Nicole Kidman, and Aja Naomi King co-star.

"This is a hilariously funny and emotionally affecting film," STXfilms chairman Adam Fogelson told Collider. "It evokes elements of films like Trading Places and Scent of a Woman, while still being completely fresh with characters that are as memorable as they are hysterical."

The film brought Cranston and Hart to Philadelphia last year, when they were spotted shooting scenes around town. Hart also played a few surprise stand-up gigs, while Cranston hit up a Sixers game and joked around with a TMZ cameraman.

The 2011 original earned more than $400 million at the box office worldwide. A comedy-drama, The Intouchables stars Omar Sy as a live-in caregiver for Francois Cluzet, who plays a wealthy man who becomes paralyzes after a paragliding accident.

A release date for The Upside has not yet been announced.
