TV picks: Tina Fey on TCM, 'Power,' BET Awards and more
Upper Darby actress-producer picks must-see movies, Leslie Jones hosts awards show, and Starz hit features performance by the late Charlie Murphy.
The Essentials. Upper Darby's Tina Fey joins host (and former 30 Rock costar) Alec Baldwin to present Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 thriller Rear Window, starring James Stewart and Philadelphia's own Grace Kelly. It's one the first of four films Fey's chosen for her guest stint on the show, which features must-see classics for film lovers. On July 1, Fey will be back with the screwball comedy The Lady Eve (1941). Her other choices: Bride of Frankenstein (1935) on July 8, and Singin' in the Rain (1952) on Aug. 5. 8 p.m. Saturday, TCM.
2017 BET Awards. The irrepressible Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live, Ghostbusters) hosts. Performers include Bruno Mars, Future, Migos, Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, and Tamar Braxton. 8 p.m. Sunday, BET.
Power. The double life of James "Ghost" St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) appears to have caught up with him in the fourth-season premiere, which finds him under arrest on murder charges, courtesy of his federal attorney girlfriend, Angela (Lela Loren). The late Charlie Murphy, the actor and comedian brother of Eddie Murphy, makes some of his final appearances on screen this season, playing prison guard Marshal Williams. 9 p.m. Sunday, Starz.
Prime Suspect: Tennison on Masterpiece. Prequel set in 1973 stars Stefanie Martini (Doctor Thorne) as the young Jane Tennison, an idea that kind of misses the point about what made Prime Suspect so different. Still, it's not Martini's fault that her character hasn't yet acquired the psychic scars (and the smoking habit) that distinguished Helen Mirren's Emmy-winning portrayal of Lydia La Plante's unforgettable copper. 10 p.m. Sunday, WHYY12.
Preacher. Second season of the comic book series adaptation gets a two-night premiere, after which it will run on Mondays. Dominic Cooper stars as the title character, a possessed clergyman and former criminal. 10 p.m. Sunday and 9 p.m. Monday, AMC.
POV. Documentary film series opens its 30th season with two films. Dalya's Other Country is about a young girl from Syria, adjusting to life in Los Angeles, where she's the only Muslim in her Roman Catholic girls school, as her divorced parents, one of whom has U.S. citizenship, ponder their future. In 4.1 Miles, an Oscar-nominated documentary short film, a Greek coast guard captain and his crew attempt to rescue as many refugees as they can in the waters off Lesbos, just 4.1 miles from the Turkish coast. 9 p.m. Monday, WHYY12.
Pretty Little Liars. Soapy, popular teen mystery, loosely based on books by Downingtown High graduate Sara Shepard, wraps up after seven seasons with a two-hour finale. Following that: a special featuring cast members Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Sasha Pieterse, and executive producer I. Marlene King. For those who can't get enough (or want to catch up), the viewing marathon begins at 11 a.m. 8 p.m. Tuesday, Freeform.
Broadchurch. Olivia Colman and David Tennant return for a third and final season of the Peabody Award-winning drama. Detective Sgt. Ellie Miller and Detective Inspector Alec Hardy investigate a sexual assault in the seaside town that may have been changed forever by the death of a child in the show's first season. 10 p.m. Wednesday, BBC America.
Zoo . Third season of the James Patterson-inspired thriller moves to 2027, when the big dangers are a rise in human sterility and "an army of unstoppable lab-made creatures, hell-bent on destroying mankind." 10 p.m. June 29, CBS.
Gypsy. New drama stars Naomi Watts as a Manhattan therapist who crosses personal and professional boundaries. Billy Crudup plays her husband. June 30, Netflix.
