P'unk Burger

Where: 1823 E. Passyunk Ave.

The lowdown: Obscenely delicious organic, all-natural burgers, milkshakes and soda in the heart of South Philly's uber-popular restaurant row.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Backstory: Marlo Dilks and her husband, Jason, decided to branch out into burgers after building a small pizza empire with SliCE in South Philly, Rittenhouse Square and Washington Township, N.J. "We felt like there were a lot of burgers in the city, but not any burger places in South Philly," said Marlo. "We wanted to locally source our menu across the board, and offer all-natural, all-organic." The burger shop also prides itself on using recyclable and compostable materials. "It's something we do in our lives as a family, so it's very important to us," Marlo added.

Unbuckle your belt: The menu goes way beyond what your father used to whip up at family barbecues. The "It's Always Sunny on EPA" offers beef, a very over-easy egg, black peppercorn bacon, American cheese and a side of tater tots. The eponymous "P'unk Burger"- medium cooked beef, smoked Gouda cheese, bacon, a splash of a signature sauce and thick-cut onion ring - is so good, you want to punch yourself in the face and order a second. But there's more than just beef. The "Wasabi Ahi" is spicy rare Ahi tuna, wasabi sauce, arugula and cusabi slaw. Or go for "The Veg" - veggie burger, sliced avocado, red onion and bibb lettuce - or a chicken breast sandwich with red onions, lettuce and barbeque sauce.

Allergies welcome: P'unk Burger is safe for anyone with food allergies. "We try to cater to everybody's needs," Marlo said. "We have gluten-free rolls and vegan ice cream. We have regular milk, and soy or almond milk. We even use separate fryers [for sides] so people don't have to worry about cross-contamination." Toppings are vegan and gluten-free, and the soda, from Maine Root, has organic cane sugar instead of corn syrup.

Shake it up: P'unk uses Philly's own Little Baby's Ice Cream for its milkshakes. You can keep it simple and opt for vanilla or chocolate, or try a specialty number like the Blueberry Cardamom Pie. Marlo recommends the black-and-white - Nutella and vanilla - created when her husband accidentally brought home vanilla ice cream for the couple's chocolate ice cream-loving daughters on a night the family tried to whip up some milkshakes. "My 4-year-old said to me,'Well, I'll eat it, but put some Nutella in there," Marlo said. "It was delicious. I said,'This is going to be our signature shake.' "

Prices: P'unk Burger, $10.95; Wasabi Ahi, $12.95; milkshakes, $5.95; tater tots, $2.95; fries, $3.75 to $4.75; P'unk salads, $5.95; Kids' chicken or beef sliders, $5.95 to $7.95.
