Hello there
It took Jenna a moment to process what Anthony had just asked her.
They had been among each other's closest friends since seventh grade at Audubon High School. Nearly a decade later, while hanging out with pretty much the same group of friends at an Old City bar in 2007, "He just randomly asked me to go out with him," Jenna said.
Spur of the moment, sure, but it wasn't quite as random for Anthony.
"I'd always sort of had a thing for her," he said.
After a moment of perspective shifting, Jenna said yes. Thus began the years of dating with no boyfriend/girlfriend labels. Officially, they were free to see other people - even if none really stood a chance.
After high school, Anthony had left Audubon for West Virginia University, where he earned a physical education degree. Jenna took classes at Camden County Community College, then worked as a receptionist at a rehab center.
Two years after they started dating, she moved to New York to earn a degree in fashion merchandising and marketing at Wood Tobé-Coburn School. They were always in touch, and whenever Jenna was in New Jersey, they were together.
In 2012, Jenna moved back to Audubon.
Anthony, now 30 and a project manager for ImageOne in Bensalem, isn't usually a big talker. But as soon as Jenna, now 31, was home for good, there was something he needed to discuss:
"Let's not mess this up," he said.
She agreed there was no one else she wanted to be with.
"He has such a great heart. He would do anything for anybody, even if he didn't know them. He never once raised his voice or disrespected me," Jenna said. "After I fell in love with him, I couldn't believe I didn't pursue it way before I did."
Anthony has always loved Jenna's bubbly personality and caring nature. "She's a wonderful person all around. She's also beautiful. Even before she came back from New York, I had already known she was the one. And then we finally acted on it."
It wasn't long after their commitment to each other that Jenna left her mom's place and joined Anthony in South Philly.
In 2013, while driving to Anthony's friend's wedding in West Virginia, Jenna told him she might be pregnant. Back at home, a test confirmed it. "We freaked out for a minute, then decided since this was going to be it forever anyway, and we were eventually going to have a baby, it might as well be now," Jenna said.
Little Anthony Jr. is now 3.
Jenna has since earned her license in skin care at PB Cosmetology Education Center and is now an aesthetician who does skin care, makeup, and lashes for her sister Melissa's company, Glamour Me Bridal.
Jenna, Anthony, and Anthony Jr. now live in Audubon.
How does forever sound?
Jenna was making mac and cheese for dinner on a May evening in 2014 when Anthony got home from work and scooped up his son.
Senior and junior soon rejoined Jenna in the kitchen. "Our son was at her legs, just like he always is, and I said, 'Honey, I put a new shirt on Anthony. Do you like it?' "
Jenna said it was nice, but her attention was on the stove top. The little guy began running around the kitchen, and his dad scooped him up a second time. "With him in my arms, I walked over to her, pointed at his shirt, and asked her to please look."
Jenna read the shirt: "Daddy, will you marry my mommy?"
Anthony knelt on the kitchen floor with Anthony Jr. beside him. "I love you. I want to be with you. I want you to be my wife," he said. "Will you marry me?"
Jenna immediately began to cry. "He kept saying, 'Well? Well?' and I don't think I could answer for a good five minutes," she said.
Eventually, Anthony got the answer he hoped for.
It was so them
The couple's wedding and reception were held at the Carriage House in Galloway. Their ceremony included elements from the Catholic tradition, in honor of Anthony's faith. His Aunt Stacy and Jenna's Aunt Kathy each did a reading, and their officiant read the well-known passage about love's patience and kindness from I Corinthians. Anthony Jr., the ring bearer, impressed everyone by making it the whole way down the aisle by himself.
Music played a significant role in the reception for 165. There was some Mummers string band for Jenna's grandmom Cass, and during dinner, Sinatra as a musical memorial to her late granddad James. Most other music favored the electronic style the couple loves. "We basically had a nightclub at our wedding," Jenna said.
Anthony Jr. danced with his parents for awhile, then he, his nanny, and his iPad retired to the bridal suite.
Awestruck
The day of the wedding, Anthony and Jenna didn't see each other until the ceremony. "By far, the best part of the day was seeing her walking toward me," Anthony said. "I'm not sure that words can describe it, but it was pure happiness and joy, and I can't express how pretty she looked. It was awesome."
Jenna loved that walk down the aisle, too. "It's when everything hit me. I was so excited to see him, and see my son. We were friends for so long, and never would have thought that this would be how we ended up. Marrying my best friend is kind of cool."
The budget crunch
A bargain: DJ Michael Scott of DiNardo Bros. Entertainment, a friend of the family, gave the couple a good deal. All the vendors worked with the couple to help them meet their tight budget, Jenna said.
The splurge: The couple spent a little extra to document the day. They fell in love with photographer Ashlee Mintz's work, and decided that although there were some cheaper options, she was worth the price. They also decided to hire videographer Mondo Videos. "I wanted to be able to pop the movie in whenever I wanted," Jenna said.
The honeymoon
Five days in Riviera Maya.
