Two men died Sunday afternoon in what appeared to be a murder-suicide in Mantua Township, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said.
A spokesman said Stephen V. Newcomb, 45, of Tristram Circle in the Villages at Berkley condominium complex, died of multiple gunshot wounds. The apparent assailant was Michael Targett, 52, whose last known residence was Sicklerville. He died of a single gunshot wound to the head, the Prosecutor's Office said.
Investigators for the Mantua Township police and the county prosecutor determined that Targett's estranged wife was living with Newcomb. She was not home at the time of the shooting. Newcomb was shot at the foot of a stairway to his upper-level condominium. Targett then apparently shot himself in the head with a .357 Magnum handgun. - Nathan Gorenstein
