WHEN POLICE responded to a "person with a gun" report on Saturday afternoon at the Christy Recreation Center, on 56th Street near Christian, the center's basketball coach told them that the opposing coach had taken out a gun, shot at him and fled.
The alleged shooter had gotten into a verbal altercation with a spectator during the game between teams of teenagers.
When Christy's coach tried to intervene as a peacemaker, the irate opposing coach "removed a gun from his waistband as he was moving backwards towards the exit door and fired one shot," police said.
"Everyone began screaming and running out of the gym" as the gunman fled, police reported. No one was hurt and there was no immediate word on the alleged gunman's whereabouts.
