A 23-year-old fugitive wanted in Philadelphia in a sexual-assault case from earlier this year was arrested in North Wildwood on Tuesday after an eight-hour standoff with police, authorities said.

North Wildwood Police Chief Matthew Gallagher said Wednesday that Jamik Washington, of Beech Lane in Bensalem, Bucks County, was arrested without incident at 6:24 a.m. Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit, which has an active warrant out for Washington's arrest, had contacted North Wildwood on Monday with information that Washington might be staying in a residence in the South Jersey shore town, North Wildwood police and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said in a joint statement.

Acting on that tip, North Wildwood police went to the house on the 200 block of West 18th Avenue. There, they saw a man matching Washington's description who refused to come to the door, authorities said.

That started a standoff at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, Gallagher said. Members of the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team, Cape May County Crisis Negotiation Team and the Prosecutor's Office also went to the scene and after negotiating with Washington for about eight hours, Washington eventually surrendered and was placed under arrest without incident, authorities said.

Philadelphia police are expected to seek Washington's extradition back to the city. Washington also faces charges of criminal trespassing and obstruction of justice in North Wildwood stemming from the eight-hour standoff.

Washington is currently in custody at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
