Was it a reckless game of Jet Ski chicken? Or a deadly mistake in Clearwater's intracoastal waterway?

That's what Florida authorities are trying to determine after Montgomery County couple aboard a personal watercraft drove directly into a double-deck tour boat about 6 p.m. Saturday near the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge.

Ramana Gadiraju, 50, and passenger Shubhada Kulkarni, 49, both of Lower Gwynedd, were killed in the collision. They have an adult son. No injuries were reported aboard the 59-foot boat owned by Tropics Boat Tours.

"Our thoughts and our prayers are with the family affected by this tragic accident," the boat is owner, Trisha Rodriguez told the Tampa Bay Times. "This has never happened to us before. It's a tragedy."

Gadiraju's LinkedIn page describes him as principal consultant at a local company CTONICS, which works with healthcare companies.

Baryl Martin, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, could not confirm reports citing witnesses who said it appeared the couple may have been playing "chicken" aboard the watercraft.

Martin said there were about 70 people aboard the boat and the number of potential witnesses could make for a lengthy investigation.

"It's going to be a while," Martin said.
