The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office filed a litany of gun and drug charges today against Britt Reid, son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid.
Reid, 21, is accused of pointing a handgun at another motorist last Tuesday in what police previously described as an apparent road-rage incident. The motorist made a 911 call and said he had been accosted by "a white kid trying to act like a gangster."
At a news conference, Risa Ferman, the first assistant district attorney, said a police search of Reid's SUV after the incident had turned up a Remington shotgun and small quantities of marijuana, cocaine and the prescription painkiller Oxycodone.
Reid was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, a third-degree felony under Pennsylvania law.
He also was charged with drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple assault, making terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, and making a false report to law enforcement authorities, the District Attorney's Office said.
Reid was arraigned this afternoon before Magisterial Judge William Maruszczak of King of Prussia. Reid was released after posting 10 percent of $100,000 bail, pending a preliminary hearing Feb. 16. A check for that amount was written by his mother, Tammy Reid, who was not with him for the court appearance.
According to an arrest affidavit, Britt Reid is accused of threatening Larry Johnson, 36, a Delaware County carpenter, in an apparent dispute over a lane of traffic. Johnson told police his assailant aimed a platinum-colored handgun at him, smiled, then drove away.
Police in Plymouth Township are still awaiting test results related to an accident later the same day involving Garrett Reid, 23, another of Reid's sons. Garrett Reid "acknowledged using heroin," according to a search-warrant affidavit. He made the admission in a written statement he gave police after the accident.
The two incidents are not related.
The one involving Britt Reid occurred at Matson Ford Road in West Conshohocken.
Police said last week that officers who searched the black SUV that Britt Reid was driving had found plastic bags with white residue; containers holding white powder and a green, leafy substance; and four small, white pills - as well as a handgun and ammunition, according to court documents.
Authorities said today that the shotgun was purchased legally by Britt Reid.
Ferman said that a .45-caliber handgun was found in a search of the Lower Merion Township house that Reid shares with his parents and other family members.
Police said the ownership of the handgun was still being investigated. They said they had preliminary information that the gun was given to Reid by an uncle while he was attending college in Arizona.
