Early morning shootings claim the lives of two men

Two men were shot dead in separate incidents this morning, bringing the city's homicide toll this year to 206.

Homicide Lt. Phil Riehl said police, responding at 4:32 a.m. to reports of gunshots in the 5600 block of Hunter Street in the Overbrook section, found 77-year-old Cleveland Powell just inside the front door of the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene a few minutes later.

Powell had been shot once in the abdomen with a handgun; he may have been the victim of a robbery, Riehl said.

Later in the morning, Edwin Diaz, 38, was found shot once in the head inside a house in the first block of East Ontario Street in Kensington at 10:46 a.m., Riehl said. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the scene.
