Police in South Jersey seriously wounded an armed man at a Woodbury donut shop this morning after the man allegedly drew a handgun on them, authorities said.

Shortly before 11 a.m., officers were called to a residential neighborhood near Route 45 and Reid Streets for a report of two suspicious men.

According to law enforcement officials, the men had been looking for drugs and knocked on the wrong door. A startled homeowner called 911 and relayed descriptions of the two men to police.

Patrolmen spotted the men in the parking lot of the Dunkin' Donuts on Route 45. As one the officers stepped from his patrol car, one of the men drew a handgun. The officer drew his service weapon and fired twice, said Bernie Weisenfeld, spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's office.

The wounded suspect was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where his condition was not known. The other man was arrested and taken into custody, Weisenfeld said.

Weisenfeld did not identify either the gunman or the police officer involved in the shooting.

The prosecutor's office is investigating the incident.
