Late Sunday, a 42-year-old man was shot four times shortly after 11 p.m. on the 1000 block of Pallas Street in West Philadelphia. The man, who has not been named by police, was pronounced dead at 5:23 a.m. at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Investigators have no motive or suspects in the slaying.
Early this morning, a 27-year-old man was shot once in the chest shortly before 4 a.m. on the 1400 block of Unity Street in Northeast Philadelphia. The victim, who has not been named, died at 5:35 a.m. at Temple University Hospital, police said.
Shortly after dawn, a 39-year-old man was shot multiple times at 6:08 a.m. near the intersection of Rising Sun Ave and Wingohocking Street in the Feltonville section. The man, who has not been named, died at 6:44 a.m. at Temple.
Before the three overnight shootings, the homicide count for the year stood at 276. In 2007, there were 328 killings to date.
The weekend began with the shooting Friday morning of Luis Rivera, 32, in North Philadelphia. Investigators speculated the slaying that may have been in retaliation for the Thursday afternoon killings of two members of the Mutter Street Boys. Police said Jose Ortiz, 45, the drug gang's leader, and Roberto Beltran, 38, were assassinated on the street.
Friday night, police were called to the 4700 block of Penn Street were they found a man who had taken a shotgun blast to his head. Carlos Maldonado, 19, was found in the hallway of his home. He was taken to Temple where he died late Saturday. Investigators have no motive or suspect, police said.
Early Sunday, in the Strawberry Mansion section, police found a 30-year-old man who had been shot in the neck on the 2800 block of Ridge Avenue. Derrick Lamar Nedd, of the 1600 block of N. 7th Street, was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. at Temple.
