E-Hsin Foo, husband of Susanna Foo, dies

E-Hsin Foo, 68, who with his wife Susanna Foo opened what became one of the top restaurants on Center City's storied Restaurant Row, died on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Bryn Mawr Hospital after a fall at his home.

Mr. Foo had suffered from a degenerative brain disease that causes problems with balance.

Born in Hunan Province, China, in 1942, Mr. Foo and his family fled to Taiwan at the Communist takeover in 1949.

After receiving a doctorate in metallurgy and materials science at Carnegie Mellon University, he taught at Florida State University but returned to Taiwan to head a university science department there.

Mr. Foo came to Philadelphia in 1979 to help run his father's restaurant and, in 1987, Mr. Foo and his wife Susanna opened Susanna Foo Chinese Cuisine on Walnut Street's Restaurant Row.

The couple closed the Walnut Street restaurant last year, but continued to operate Susanna Foo Gourmet Kitchen in Radnor, which opened in 2006.

Besides his wife of 42-years, Mr. Foo is survived by two sons Gabriel and Jim, three grandchildren and five siblings.

A funeral service was set for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6 at the Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home, 30 E. Athens Ave., Ardmore, with visitation from 12:30 to 3 p.m. that day.
