Tree falls, halts Northeast Corridor rail service

A fallen tree halted service on trains operating on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor for more than five hours today, disrupting the morning rush hour.

The tree hit a power line near Princeton Junction about 5:20 a.m., knocking out signals, Amtrak said. Trains started running again around 10:30 a.m. after the signals were restored. Amtrak had earlier said the tree fell in Morrisville, Bucks County.

Affected were Amtrak trains operating between 30th Street Station and New York, SEPTA's Trenton Line, and NJ Transit rail service between Trenton and New Brunswick.

Despite the resumption of service, delays and cancellations continued through the day.

During the outage, riders between Philadelphia and Trenton were advised to use a combination of the PATCO High Speed Line and NJ Transit's River Line as an alternate. NJ Transit honored SEPTA passes on the River Line during that time.
