Two teenagers remain at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia tonight - one in intensive care, the other under observation for a concussion - after they were hit by a Darby Borough man driving without a license late Friday, Ridley Township police said.

Officers found Tyrone J. Williams, 52, in a damaged Ford Windstar van in Chester, about a mile from where he struck four young pedestrians. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, authorities said.

Investigators believe Williams ran a red light at the intersection of Morton Avenue and MacDade Boulevard just after 10 p.m. and plowed into the teenagers while they were in the crosswalk.

Williams was weaving and nearly drove into oncoming traffic before police pulled him over on westbound MacDade minutes later, Ridley Township Police Sgt. Charles A. Palo Jr. said in a statement. Eyes bloodshot and tears running down his face, he told officers he thought he had hit a traffic cone, Palo said.

The teenagers - three girls and a boy, all between the ages of 14 and 15 - sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals, some by medical helicopters that landed on the nearby Ridley High School soccer fields. By Saturday evening, two had been released, Palo said.

Authorities have not released their names, but witnesses at the scene Friday identified them as three Ridley High freshmen and an eighth-grader from Ridley Middle School. The group had been walking to a nearby Wawa, said Matt Borchert, 14, who said he was with two of the teenagers minutes before the wreck.

Williams had been driving without a license since May, when it was suspended because of an undisclosed medical condition, Palo said.

He was charged with causing an accident involving injury or death and remains at the George Hill Correctional Facility in Thornton in lieu of $150,000 bond.
