A freight train struck and killed a man lying on the tracks in Newark, Del., late Thursday, state police said today.

They said the engineer and conductor of the 52-car CSX train saw the man on the tracks just west of the University of Delaware about 10:40 p.m. but could not stop the train in time.
The 39-year-old Newark man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
