A 42-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in a parking lot Thursday afternoon in the city's Mill Creek section, police said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the victim was shot in the abdomen and leg in the parking lot of the West Park Homes in the 4600 block of Fairmount Avenue, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim was able to identify the gunman, who had fled the scene in a Mercury Sable, Small said. Police stopped a car of the same make and model at 38th and Reno Streets, Small said. The driver "bailed out and ran about a block and tried to hide in some bushes," Small said.

Police arrested the 40-year-old man, who the victim said was his assailant. The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.   - Robert Moran
