Ex-treasurer of S. Jersey youth football league sentenced for embezzling funds
Michael DiFlorio, 49, of Williamstown, was sentenced to 330 days in county jail.
A former treasurer of a South Jersey youth football league was sentenced Friday to nearly a year behind bars for embezzling more than $56,000 from the league.
Michael DiFlorio, 49, of Williamstown, Gloucester County, was sentenced in Superior Court to 330 days in county jail and five years' probation.
He had pleaded guilty on April 24 to a charge of third-degree theft for stealing $56,777 from the South Jersey Elite Invitational Youth Football League from July 2014 through June 2016, the New Jersey Attorney General's Office said in a statement.
He also pleaded guilty that day to third-degree theft for stealing $1,147 from his former employer, an exterminating company. As part of his sentence, DiFlorio was ordered to pay full restitution to the football league and his former employer.
DiFlorio withdrew cash and wrote checks out of the league fund, mostly for his personal benefit, the investigation showed. Among the thefts alleged was more than $14,000 in cash generated by the league's 2015 championship game, prosecutors said.
"By stealing from this youth football league, DiFlorio betrayed its young athletes and set the worst possible example as a youth leader," Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino said in the news release. "The fact that his criminal conduct was tantamount to stealing from children and their programs makes it all the more deplorable."
