A 43-year-old Burlington City man has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his stepfather Tuesday afternoon, officials announced Wednesday.

Stephen J. Paul of the 100 block of East Broad Street in Burlington City was arrested late Tuesday after authorities found the body of his stepfather, Edward Williams, 70, of Westampton, in Paul's apartment, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

About 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a family member called authorities because they believed Williams was inside the apartment. Paul would not let the relative inside.

When Burlington City police arrived, Paul opened the door, officials said.

Williams had lacerations to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Prosecutor's Office. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was also found inside the residence.

Paul was taken into custody without incident. In addition to murder, Paul also faces related weapons offenses. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
